Non-Production Purchasing, known as Facilities, Materials and Services Purchasing (FM&SP), purchases items that are not directly used in the production of vehicles. Approximately 9,000 suppliers provide this wide range of materials and services. Examples include office supplies, healthcare, computers, tooling, dies, manufacturing equipment, and the buildings themselves. Facilities, Materials and Services Purchasing develops commodity strategies that guide sourcing decisions for worldwide purchases and works with suppliers to achieve quality, cost, and technology objectives. Supplier Technical Assistance

Supplier Technical Assistance (STA) develops, communicates, and implements the supply base quality strategy. Supplier Technical Assistance works with suppliers to achieve their quality objective, including Q1 status, and assists in Advanced Product Quality Planning and resolution of supplier issues. STA sub-groups include:
  • Commodity engineers provide STA interface between Ford Motor Company and suppliers. They support supplier improvement and self-reliance through the alignment of supplier internal Quality Operating System Metrics with Ford Supplier Improvement Metrics.
  • Program engineers participate on the Forward Model Program Teams that drive the resolution of supplier launch risks through Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), and formal reviews of launch readiness.
  • Resident managers / engineers support the Plant Vehicle Teams (PVTs) at each lead assembly plant. They monitor supplier performance at assigned plants and help suppliers reduce defect rates.
  • Lean manufacturing and 6-Sigma engineers lead the global, collaborative process in which Ford Motor Company and suppliers share responsibility for eliminating waste throughout the value chain. (In Ford of Europe, included in Team Value Management)
Other Key Purchasing Groups

Other functional groups within Purchasing include:
  • Business Strategy Sustainability supports the global purchasing organization by conducting competitive analysis and strategic studies, developing global policies and procedures, ensuring aligned internal and external communication, and leading the organization in efforts aimed at promoting socially-acceptable working conditions in the global supply chain.
  • Global Commodities Purchasing leads the development of long-term strategic procurement direction considering corporate strategies, cycle plan, and global industry trends. This includes the strategic development and implementation of the supporting Purchasing systems.
  • Supplier Diversity Development leads the efforts to identify, and grow, minority-owned enterprises into competitive positions within the industry. (Currently U.S. only)
  • Team Value Management leads a process driven by benchmark data to provide a ground-up analysis of commodities to identify and deliver maximum value at lowest total cost. This fact-based, collaborative method eliminates waste throughout Ford and its supply base. (In Europe, includes Lean Manufacturing and 6-Sigma)
